Donating Your Time and an Offer of Mine
In a recent Los Angeles Times article, celebrated Science Fiction writer John Scalzi wrote:
It’s difficult to focus on writing, particularly fiction, when the world feels like it’s on fire and everyone you know is trying to decide between hiding in a hole or taking up recreational alcoholism to get by.
I will be the first to admit that I've been distracted lately with just such thoughts. I have watched my Twitter feed explode in new stories retweeted, assumptions being challenged, calls to action; all of these have been interspersed with those same people gearing up for GenCon or pushing their latest Kickstarters. All of us are reeling from the shift in the social and political landscape, and mourning the America we thought we knew. At the same time, I've been blessed to see that not everyone is, as Mr. Scalzi put it, trying to decide between hiding in a hole or drinking. People are standing up. People are taking action.
This is where the intersection of my life as a Project Manager and a Gamer truly happens. I couldn't be more proud of those who have been volunteering their words and money to fight the evils of white supremacists, Nazis, and other fascists who are plaguing our country. The fight will not just end here, however. This is not a one-and-done kind of situation. The struggle for equality requires our constant attention.
For those of you capable and willing to be a volunteer to strengthen your community, or communities around the country, I urge you to sign up with Volunteermatch. It's like Careerbuilder or Monster, but specifically for nonprofits and volunteers. You can filter based on the causes you want to support, whether its local or virtual, etc.
Now for my offer: If there are any charity organizations fighting to bring equality to a disadvantaged populace (LGBT, Religion, Race, etc) that need assistance either in the North Virginia area or virtually, I'm available. Contact me through my website, send me a tweet, or message me on LinkedIn. I'll mentor youth or adults; I'll provide management oversight; I'll write documentation or articles. If it's in my skill set and capabilities, you've got it. This offer is first come, first serve.
